Born on August 18, 1967, into a family of musicians, Mehndi is the typical lion-hearted Leo. That’s why his mother, Sardarni Balbir Kaur, herself a Prabhakar in music, named him after the character of a dacoit, Daku Daler Singh, played by the legendary Prem Nath in a movie she saw much before he was born. In fact, an astrologer had told Mehndi’s mother that she would beget a son whose name would start with the letter D and that he would do well as a musician. The moniker Mehndi, of course, came much later when elder brother Amarjeet suggested the name after listening to the soulful Pervez Mehndi of Pakistan.
True to his name, the mischievous Mehndi would sneak into his mother’s lap during the paath, render a shabad and go back to his playing. There began his first coaching in the nuances of music by the doting parents who were sure their little one was naturally gifted and wanted him to be a Singer.
The unstoppable Mehndi is not only all about his music. What makes him stand out against the multitude of popsters is his unique sense of style. Once termed and awarded the “Most Stylish Person in Music” by the fashion and lifestyle glossy, Elle, here’s a man who definitely wants every eye on him, and he has the bravado and the dazzling joyous smile to pull it off too. The Mehndi panache isn’t so much about clothes as it is about the spirit he brings to them — and everything else he touches. Call it happy-go-lucky, call it plain boisterous, but he would rather classify himself as conservative with a little bit of an edge. “I want something that’s different from what everyone else has. I’m very clear-cut about myself … I don’t conform to trends.” That shows!
Right from his Bolo Ta Ra Ra Ra days, Mehndi has sported many looks If during Bolo Ta Ra Ra Ra the plain bandana look was on, soon Mehndi switched on to something that has become his trademark — the diamanté turban (pug). The classic pug has almost become a Mehndi copyright, so much so that over the years his garb might have changed, but the pug has remained a staple. What’s more, the style icon has done more for the choga than any Indian designer dealing in ethnic revival would do. The flowing robes inspired by the Indian Kings have found many fans in India and abroad. In fact, the robes are still being duly copied for stage shows abroad! The trendsetter that Mehndi is, he knows and is comfortable with his appeal. He has a lifestyle that shouts pop icon. In fact, it would be right to add that he is the only Indian pop star with an image of a pop star. Mehndi, the man has liking and an eye for all things beautiful. A collector of gems and precious stones, an avid reader, a fantabulous cook, collector of ittars, and a passionate farmer -Daler Mehndi is all this and more.
A man with a definite mission: nail the charts by unleashing million-selling albums and work towards a healthier, cleaner environment both literally and metaphorically.
Loose-limbed warbler and lord of crowd-pleasers, his fame is widespread and popularity so huge there is no way you wouldn’t have heard of the king crooner, who’s rightfully credited with making bhangra beats as hot as baalti meat and curry round the globe.
Forceful, fearless, frank, flirtatious and always fuelled up for something new, Mehndi's route map to musical monarchy is well - trodden. Still, it's one thing knowing India's greatest performer is all that and a whole other thing to hear that appetite and experience, that longing, across all these years he's been ruling the charts. Sample this: with catchy hook lines, sing-a-long melodies and upbeat numbers so typical of the ‘Sultan of Swing’ (title conferred by Indian Express), the power-packed performer has dented the charts not once, but a record seven times!. Daler’s super hit song TUNAK TUNAK TUN has created a legendary rage, it has become an internet phenomena. He is the only asian Artist to have had 26 million hits on You Tube for Tunak Tunak and its only going stronger. What’s more, the ‘Messiah of Masti’ (title conferred by Gulf News), ‘the Pied Piper Musician’, ‘Dr. Smile’ (The Hindu), ‘The Sardar of Swing’ (The India Today) is a prolific songwriter, composer, choreographer, environmentalist and philanthropist.
